On March 18, the Çanakkale 1915 Bridge, the longest suspension bridge on the planet and linking Europe with Asia, connecting the Turkish cities of Lapseki and Sütlüce, was inaugurated in Turkey. It has a total length of 4,048 meters and between its two support points that are in the sea there are 2,023 meters of separation.
On the same date of the inauguration, a commemorative coin with a face of 1 Turkish lira and bimetallic type was put into circulation, dedicated to this great work of engineering.
The name of the bridge, Çanakkale 1915, refers to the victory of the Ottoman troops against the British and French in the naval battle of Gallipoli or Çanakkale Savaşlari, which took place on March 18, 1915, within the Gallipoli campaign in the World War I.
The measure of the central span is also symbolic: the 2,023 meters are an allusion to the centenary of the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, which will be celebrated next year, in 2023.
The infrastructure has taken five years to complete, one and a half years less than initially planned. It was built by a consortium of Turkish and South Korean companies, so the opening ceremony was also attended by South Korean Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum.
While on one of its sides the coin shows an image of the bridge, the other shows the side common to all circulation coins with the face of 1 lira, in which the year of issue varies, in this case 2022.
Characteristics of the coin
Face value: 1 Turkish lira
Type: bimetallic
Diameter: 26.15 mm
Weight: 8.3 g
Issue volume: 5,000,000
