Those of us who have been involved in euro coins for several years know that one of the most popular coins that Finland used to issue were bi-metallic 5-euro pieces of which several series were issued. After four years without issuing this type of coin, I just learned that they are issuing one again and it will be dedicated to one of the most appreciated sports there, Ice Hockey.
In May 2022, Finland will host the Men's Ice Hockey World Championship for the ninth time. On May 13, 2022, the opening day of the tournament, a Finnish commemorative coin will be issued in honor of the games.
The design on one side of the commemorative coin depicts an ice hockey game: an ice rink, players and a stand full of cheering spectators. The outer ring of the coin features the inscriptions SUOMI FINLAND and the face value of the coin, 5 EURO.
The other side shows five hockey sticks and a puck. The golden ring includes the abbreviations MM and VM (World Championship in Finnish and Swedish), the year 2022 and the letter “M”, the initial of the artist.
