March 5, 2026 marked the arrival of a new series for collectors: the Italian divisional series in fior di conio quality, consisting of nine coins, which brings together the eight usual euro denominations intended for circulation along with a special 5 euro silver coin.
This additional piece, designed by the artist Monica Ciucci, pays homage to the architectural treasures of the city of Lecce, one of the most emblematic centers of the Baroque in Italy.
A silver tribute to the architecture of Lecce
The commemorative 5 euro coin is minted in 925 fine silver, with a diameter of 32 millimeters and a weight of 18 grams.
Obverse
The obverse features a perspective view from below of a detail of the façade of the Basilica of Santa Croce, one of the most representative monuments of the Lecce Baroque style. Its spectacular rose window, the central element of the design, is particularly noteworthy.
The inscription “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA” appears at the top, while the year of issue, 2026, appears at the bottom.
Reverse
The whole is framed by an ellipse, at the top of which is the face value “5 EU | RO”. To the right appears the Sant'Oronzo column, crowned by the statue of the saint, which also acts as a sundial thanks to the shadow it casts.
The inscription “LECCE” appears in the upper left part, while the mint mark and the author's signature, M. CIUCCI, are located in the lower area.
The divisional series: the only way to earn a few cents
Besides the appeal of the silver coin, the series holds special interest for collectors because it includes the 1, 2, and 5 centime coins, denominations that have not been minted for circulation in Italy for many years. Specifically, the 1 and 2 centime values ceased production for everyday use, and the 5 centime coin is minted in very limited quantities.
Therefore, divisional series have become practically the only way to incorporate these recent coins into a collection.
Price and availability
For those who prefer to acquire only the commemorative piece, the 5 euro coin dedicated to the Roman and Baroque art of Lecce will also be issued individually from April 9, 2026, with a print run of 4,000 copies and a price of 80 euros.
