Between dynastic tradition and Europeanism… and a questionable trade strategy

Luxembourg's numismatic program for 2026 includes two commemorative €2 coins, clearly distinct in their themes but virtually identical in their commercial approach. Both issues combine recent history and institutional projection, while also reflecting an increasingly evident trend: market segmentation through multiple versions with different mint marks.

Accession to the throne of Grand Duke Guillaume and his 45th anniversary

It commemorates Guillaume's accession to the throne in 2025 and his 45th anniversary in 2026, marking the beginning of a new era for the Luxembourg monarchy.

The design features a left-facing profile portrait of Grand Duke Guillaume, rendered in a realistic and understated style, very much in keeping with contemporary Luxembourgish issues. The bust occupies the central area and is surrounded by the circular inscription “GROUSSHERZOG GUILLAUME VU LËTZEBUERG,” which identifies both the sovereign and the country in Luxembourgish. To the right of the portrait, the year “2026” is displayed vertically, seamlessly integrated into the composition. At the bottom are two key dates that structure the meaning of the coin: “11.11.1981,” corresponding to the Grand Duke's birth, and “3.10.2025,” marking his accession to the throne. Alongside these dates are the mint marks and engraver's marks, discreetly incorporated into the design. The entire design is framed by the outer ring with the twelve stars of the European Union, reinforcing its character as a common currency.

Identification of the mints

BHMA (Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt, Munich) → Proof version with KNM

This coin carries significant symbolic weight as it marks the beginning of Guillaume's reign. However, from a numismatic perspective, the design follows a consistent style: official portrait, clean composition, and absolute prominence of the monarch.

40th anniversary of the International Charlemagne Prize to the people of Luxembourg

It recalls the awarding in 1986 of the Charlemagne Prize to the people of Luxembourg, in recognition of their role in European construction.

The obverse features a much more elaborate and symbolic composition, centered on the enthroned figure of Charlemagne, depicted frontally with imperial attributes reminiscent of medieval iconography. The figure is positioned at the center of the design, within an architectural structure reminiscent of a throne or baldachin. Around it are several inscriptions that provide historical context: “PREIS VUN DER STAD OCHEN” refers to the prize awarded to the city of Aachen, while “PRÄIS KARL DE GROSSE” explicitly identifies the award dedicated to Charlemagne. The dates “1986,” the year the prize was awarded to the people of Luxembourg, and “2026,” corresponding to the issue, also appear. The legend “PEUPLE LUXEMBOURGEOIS” highlights the collective nature of the recognition. The design combines different typefaces and decorative elements, creating a more narrative and dense scene than that of the previous coin. As is customary, the outer ring includes the twelve stars of the European Union.

Identification of the mints

MDP (Monnaie de Paris) → base issue
KNM (Royal Netherlands Mint) → BU versions
BHMA (Bavarian State Mint, Munich) → Proof version alongside KNM

Unlike the coin dedicated to Guillaume, this piece stands out for its rich iconography. It is a more "European" coin in its conception, less focused on the figure of the head of state and more on the historical identity of the continent.

Criticism: an increasingly questioned business strategy

The two coins share exactly the same minting and distribution scheme, highlighting a clear policy: multiply variants to increase commercial performance.

Main problems

1. Artificial segmented scarcity
Although the total mintage (131,000 coins) is not particularly low, it is fragmented into several versions, forcing the collector to acquire multiple formats.

2. Multiplication of mints without historical justification
The combined use of France (MDP) , the Netherlands (KNM) and Germany (BHMA) in the same issue responds more to a commercial strategy than to a technical need.

3. Increased cost for the collector
Special editions significantly increase the price compared to the face value.

4. Loss of numismatic coherence
The traditional link between coin and mint is diluted, reducing the identity of the issue.
