In order to commemorate the date on which the first public postal service was created in Portugal, a coin dedicated to the "500 Years of the Postal Service in Portugal" was issued yesterday, September 18, to highlight the importance of this service and its evolution over five centuries.

On November 6, 1520, King Manuel I published the Royal Charter that created the first postal service in Portugal. After three centuries linked directly to the Royal House of Portugal, in 1799 it came under the control of the public administration. In 2014 this service was finally privatized.

Casa da Moeda commemorates the 500th anniversary of the postal service in Portugal with a commemorative collectible coin by Luiz Duran, former art director of CTT (current name of the Portuguese postal company) and author of hundreds of postage stamps. The obverse of this coin features the iconic Mala-posta, a horse-drawn carriage that, from the mid-19th century onwards, began regularly transporting passengers and mail between Lisbon and Porto.

The coin presents on the obverse the illustration of a "Mala-posta" also known as diligence, a carriage drawn by two pairs of horses, which in Portugal began to transport passengers and mail from the mid-19th century, the face value is inscribed in the upper part in the center next to the national coat of arms, on the left, the years "2020" and "1520" appear.

On the reverse, several hands are represented passing letters between them, alluding to the activity of the post office from 1520 to the present, below which is inscribed the date that celebrates "500 years of Correio", in the lower left edge the legend «Casa da Moeda» and the right the name of the author «Luiz Duran».
