The issuance of the second series of coins called "Portuguese numismatic treasures" begins, the first series of which was highly appreciated by collectors for its high historical value, with the issuance of the "Medio Escudo de Ceuta" coin, which would have been the first coin Portuguese minted in gold, in Ceuta, Africa.

In this second series, the Casa da Moeda recreates some of the most beautiful gold specimens of Portuguese numismatics, due to their significance, historical and economic importance and rarity.

The Half Escudo de Ceuta was perhaps the first Portuguese gold coin minted in Africa, in the city of Ceuta, conquered by D. João I in 1415. Produced in the context of overseas expansion, this coin already shows clear references to the domain Portuguese. in Ceuta.

The recreation of this treasure of Portuguese numismatics, the first in a series consisting of five coins, is carried out by the sculptor Rui Vasquez.


The obverse represents the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Portugal, formed by a coat of arms with five shields placed in the shape of a cross, each of which contains five cross-shaped bezants, superimposed on the cross of the Order of Avis and flanked by eight castles . The legends that surround the coin are: "Portuguese Republic" and "2020", with the identification of the author in the lower left part of the shield and the legend "Casa da Moeda" on the right.


On the reverse, where the image of the "Ceuta Half Shield" is recreated, the legend "CEPTE + DOMIN" is shown surrounding the representation of a fortification formed by three towers topped by battlements and surrounded by a double layer of walls topped by battlements. , with door and openings, facing the sea; in the center, the letter C, identifies the monetary center of Ceuta, below which the face value € 1.5 is inscribed.
