When we talk about coins, a round metallic object comes to mind, but these premises are not always fulfilled. Today I bring you one of those coins that break schemes, a rectangular coin that is well worth including in your collection.

The Bank of Hungary has just issued two rectangular coins, presented vertically, one in silver with a face of 10,000 florins (€ 27.82) and the other in cupro-nickel of 2,000 florins (€ 5.56), both with the same design . The coins have been put up for sale in Hungary at face value.

The coins belong to the "National Parks of Hungary" series and are dedicated to the "Kiskunság National Park", which marks the 45th anniversary of its establishment. As in previous coins in the series, the designs show species of animals or plants, characteristics of the national parks to which they are dedicated. The coins dedicated to the Kiskunság National Park present two of its most characteristic features: the saline lakes and the sand dunes.

The Kiskunság National Park was founded in 1975 to honor the coexistence of man and nature for hundreds of years in these lands. Two thirds of the national park of more than 50,000 hectares was designated as a biosphere reserve under the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Program in 1979.

On the obverse, there is a representation of a bird eating in the water with its image reflected. Due to its special needs in terms of habitat, the bird offers a perfect symbol of the salty lakes found in the Kiskunság National Park. The legends on the coin are: "MAGYARORSZÁG" (Hungary), below, in two lines the denominations "10,000" or "2000 FORINT", in the lower right corner the mint mark "BP." and the year of issue «2020». The lower left corner reads "GULIPÁN" vertically.

The reverse shows a representation of a typical natural element of the National Park, the rolling sand dunes, accompanied by some trees and bushes. Above the main composition, two horizontal lines show the legend "KISKUNSÁGI NEMZETI PARK" (Kiskunság National Park), and below, on the left, two horizontal lines "FÜLÖPHÁZI BUCKAVIDÉK" (Fülöpháza Sand Dunes), referring to the territory. On the right, the mark of the artist Gábor Kereszthury, designer of the coin, is placed.
