We are going to meet another interesting new coin from the American Innovation series issued by the United States Mint. They are 1 dollar coins with which we want to honor innovation and innovators in each of the States and territories that make up the United States. The one that I present to you today, the seventh in the series, represents the State of Maryland and has the Hubble space telescope as its protagonist.

Developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and launched in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope is one of the largest and most versatile space telescopes. It is also the first designed to be used in space by astronauts. Teams from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and the Space Telescope Science Institute, both located in Maryland, are managing the telescope.

Positioned beyond the distortion produced by Earth's atmosphere, Hubble has an unobstructed view of the universe. Its four main instruments have the ability to obtain images and electromagnetic spectra.

The data transmitted by Hubble has helped further refine estimates of the age of the universe, trace the growth of galaxies, identify planets beyond our solar system, study planets within our solar system, identify black holes, observe the birth and death of stars, and many other scientific discoveries.

The reverse design shows the Hubble Space Telescope orbiting the Earth surrounded by a field of stars. The inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE," and "MARYLAND."

Designer: Joseph Menna

Designed by Justin Kunz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, the obverse features the same design common to the entire series, featuring the image of the Statue of Liberty in profile and the inscriptions "$ 1" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" (IN GOD WE TRUST).
