2022 marks the 20th anniversary of the entry into circulation of euro banknotes and coins. On January 1, 2002, 12 EU countries introduced euro banknotes and coins. Three years earlier, the first countries had fixed their exchange rates, adopted a shared monetary policy within the framework of the European Central Bank and launched their new common currency on world financial markets.

Today, the euro is the currency of 19 EU countries with more than 340 million people and the second most important currency in the world. Euro notes and coins are a tangible, everyday reminder of the freedom, comfort and opportunity that the European Union makes possible.

To commemorate the event, the National Mint and Stamp Factory Royal Mint will issue a 10-euro silver coin with a face next Monday, July 4.

On the reverse of the coin, there is a representation of Princess Europa, used as a holographic image on euro banknotes, and an image of a bull recalling Zeus in the kidnapping of Europa, to his left are the face value of 10 EURO and the mintmark and to its right, at the top, twelve stars appear. At the bottom, in capital letters and in a circular direction, appears the legend XX ANNIVERSARY OF THE EURO.

The obverse reproduces the left portrait of His Majesty King Felipe VI. At the top, in a circular direction and in capital letters, appears the legend FELIPE VI REY DE ESPAÑA. In the lower part, between two points, the year of minting 2022. Surrounding the motifs and legends is a ridge of pearls.
