Pachycephalosaurus means “thick-headed lizard” in Greek, an especially apt name given that the prehistoric herbivore featured on the penultimate coin in the Supersaurs series had a cranial vault up to 25cm thick. As the second part of its name indicates, Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis lived in what is now the northwestern United States and the province of Alberta in Canada during the late Cretaceous period, about 70 million years ago.

Unusually curved and with short, blunt spines protruding along its edge, the skull of Pachycephalosaurs was unique among dinosaurs. Towards the front it narrowed into a small knobby beak and the eyes were forward-facing, which meant the dinosaur could see stereoscopically, as we humans do, in three dimensions. Scientists do not agree on the function of the skull. The first and most popular theory interprets it as a weapon used in interspecies combat, although this is disputed. Another theory supposes that the skull served as an element of individual recognition and exerted a signaling effect on conspecifics through its shape and color. This idea is supported by the fact that sexual dimorphism probably existed in thick-skinned dinosaurs; that is, males had larger and higher cranial roofs than females. The flattest skulls found show no lesions, suggesting that they belonged to females or to youngsters who did not have to fight in the mating season.

The obverse features a color printed Pachycephalosaurus threatened by a predator, the Allosaurus, framed within a prehistoric landscape.

This coin and all those in the series have the peculiarity that they have been colored with special inks that make the silhouette of the animal represented on the piece shine in the dark.

The obverse of the coin features the silhouettes of the 12 prehistoric animals from the Supersaurs series. All 3 euro coins in the series are legal tender in Austria.

The Austrian Mint has officially issued this eleventh and penultimate piece of the series on June 15, 2022.
