For more than 200 years, a disturbing occurrence has been reported in Chaleur Bay and Northumberland Strait. Some describe a ball of incandescent fire; others have seen a three-masted manned ship with its sails ablaze. Those who have attempted a rescue say that as they get closer, the burning ship suddenly disappears without a trace… This is the disturbing story featured in a new Canadian currency, in which a ship appears and disappears before our eyes.

This famous "fire ship" is most often seen in Chaleur Bay, but sightings have also been reported in Northumberland Strait, along the coast of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia.

One theory is that it is the Fire of San Telmo, a phenomenon in which electrical discharges from the atmosphere take the form of glows that form long, pointed structures, like the mast of a ship.

The ghost ship is also known as "The Bad Weather Fire" in the Chaleur Bay region, where its appearance heralds the approach of a storm. Some have suggested that it is caused by atmospheric discharge. Others think it could be caused by a discharge of phosphorus from deep in Chaleur Bay, such as the will-o'-the-wisp phenomenon, where a flame-like glow appears at night in swamps and bogs.

The reverse design, by Canadian artist Neil Hamelin, moves to the shores of Atlantic Canada, where two local sailors push a boat through the surf. They are attempting a rescue just as the storm breaks, but the ship in need is only visible when the scene is viewed under black light. Thanks to Color Reveal technology, a three-masted ship appears on the horizon and seems to be on fire from stem to stern… But is it real or is it an illusion?

The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the work of Susanna Blunt.
