With a legacy dating back to 1972, UK Pride has established itself as the premier event on the LGBTQ+ calendar. Synonymous with visibility, unity, and equality, their annual parades are colorful celebrations of the LGBTQ+ community and are hugely popular across the country.
The first official UK Pride event took place in London on July 1, 1972 with approximately 2,000 participants. As the first Pride event to be held in the UK, London Pride has a rich history spanning decades and generations. Due to its location, it is also the largest and one of the most diverse Pride events in the UK, attracting around 1.5 million attendees.
There are currently over 150 Pride events across the UK. These events, which promote solidarity, togetherness and inclusion in a colorful and carnival-like environment, have played a fundamental role in promoting social equality and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community.
In honor of this truly revolutionary movement that helped change the course of history, The Royal Mint celebrates the 50th anniversary of the UK's first Pride event with a 50 pence coin, marking the first time the British LGBTQ+ community it is held on a UK coin.
Designed by East London artist and LGBTQ+ activist Dominque Holmes in collaboration with Pride UK, the coin uses "state-of-the-art color printing technology" to bring the colors of the rainbow flag to life in color edition coins. along with the words “Pride”, “Protest”, “Visibility”, “Unity” and “Equality”.
The obverse features the traditional image of Queen Elizabeth II created by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark. The face value of 50 PENCE (pence) and the year of issue, 2022, appear around the image of the monarch.
