Just a few hours ago, the Ufficio Filatelico e Numismatico de San Marino has provided all the information, including the image, of the first 2-euro commemorative coin that will be issued this year. Exactly next March 1 is the day on which the piece dedicated to the "450th anniversary of the birth of Caravaggio" is broadcast, considered one of the greatest exponents of Baroque painting.
The design on the obverse of the coin, by Silvia Petrassi, shows the main image of the work «Penitent Magdalene» painted by Caravaggio in 1596.
This work was part of a set designed to decorate the rooms of its first patron, Cardinal Francesco Maria Del Monte. The model was a prostitute who would ultimately participate in The Death of the Virgin (the painter's masterpiece), and who years later was found dead in the Tiber River. This painting speaks especially of Caravaggio's scarcity of resources, since the model's dress was worn by the painter in Narciso (another of his works), and he always used the same models. However, the painting shows the repentance of the former courtesan and her melancholy for being a sinner. It is an image of a naked soul.
Several of its objects, such as jewels or money, appear lying on the ground, as well as apparently a bottle of wine that could represent the typical alabaster bottle used for ointments, used by the Magdalene with Jesus.
The 54,000 coins that count as issue volume will be presented as you can see in the image.
Remind you that the second 2 euro commemorative coin of 2021 that San Marino will issue will be under the theme "550th anniversary of the birth of Albrecht Dürer", considered the most famous artist of the German Renaissance.
