From February 8 to 21 this month, the XLVI Alpine Ski World Championship is held in the Italian town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, under the organization of the International Ski Federation and the Italian Ski Federation.

Taking advantage of the sporting event, the Italian Mint, Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, has issued a 5 euro face coin minted in silver for what is considered the first major winter sports event in the era of the pandemic.

The obverse of the coin shows in the center a skier participating in the Giant Slalom, one of the disciplines of alpine skiing; in the background, the Tofane, the imposing massif of the Dolomites near Cortina d'Ampezzo. At the bottom are the inscriptions "ITALIAN REPUBLIC" and the name of the author of the design "PETRASSI".

The reverse shows in the center of the composition the official logo of the Alpine Ski World Championship in Cortina d'Ampezzo, in color; above, a detail of the Dolomites in which the year of issue "2021" is embedded; on the left, the face value "5 EURO"; in the right field, the «R», as the mint mark of the Mint of Rome; in the exergue, arched, the inscription "FIS ALPINE WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS".
