To conclude the series of coins dedicated to the "Ages of Europe", where some of the most important European artistic movements are reflected, the Europe series, in 2020, had as its theme The Gothic, a style that especially marked European architecture among the 12th and 14th centuries, where the vaults and pointed or pointed arches stand out, as well as the stained glass windows, elements present in this Portuguese coin, created by the designer Eduardo Aires.
On December 2, the Portuguese INCM issued a 5 euro face coin dedicated to this artistic style with which it participates in this European initiative, being able to be purchased in different metals and prices, depending on the version.
The coin called «El Gótico» shows on the obverse, in the center, the representation of a Gothic style arch, within the illustration of a complete circle and an incomplete circle, which begins at the top with the symbol of the Europa series and ends, on the right side, with the Portuguese national emblem, and with 12 stars distributed in the central part of the coin.
On the reverse side, the legends «Portugal 2020 Gothic 5 Euro» is shown in the upper part, in the center, the representation of a Gothic arch inserted in a set of graphics of several arches, with the legends «Casa da Moeda» and the from the author's name "Eduardo Aires".
The images in the upper part correspond to the cupro-nickel coin, which can be purchased at its face value at banks in Portugal. Below we see the versions minted in silver, with a different design and with some color notes, and in gold.
The silver version is the result of an innovative process developed by Casa da Moeda, in alliance with the Institute of Mechanical Engineering of the Instituto Superior Técnico, which allows the addition of two different materials at the time of minting: metal and polymer. (This version has not yet been released.)
