Janko Matúška was a poet belonging to the new generation of Slovak intellectuals. Born now 200 years ago, the Slovak Mint, Mincovňa Kremnica, taking advantage of the anniversary, has issued a coin dedicated to the influential character, author, among others, of the lyrics of the Slovak national anthem.

Janko Matúška was born on January 10, 1821 in Orava, a region in the north of what is now Slovakia. He wrote poems, but was also drawn to historical themes, ballads, legends in verse, and drama. He is famous for writing the lyrics to a song that became the Slovak national anthem in the 20th century. After his studies, he worked as a civil servant in his native Orava. Matúška was a local organizer of the Revolution of 1848/49. In 1849 he had to hide in the mountains, where he fell ill. Later he was forced to retire due to health problems, suffering them until his death. His literary works, although modest in number, are among the jewels of Slovak romantic literature.

The reverse of the coin features a framed portrait of Janko Matúška with the poet's facsimile signature inscribed along the left edge of the frame. The denomination of the coin '10 EURO 'can be found below the portrait. Along the upper left edge of the design is the name 'JANKO MATÚŠKA', and along the lower left edge, separated from the name by a point and in the opposite direction, are the years of Matúška's birth and death '1821 - 1877 '. To the right of the frame are the stylized letters 'PV' referring to the designer of the coin, Peter Valach.

The obverse of the coin features a framed image of Orava Castle, symbolizing Janko Matúška's home region. Within that frame, the Slovak coat of arms appears above the castle, and to the right of the frame, inscribed in facsimile, is a four-line excerpt from the original handwriting of what became the Slovak national anthem. Along the bottom edge of the design is the name of the issuing country 'SLOVENSKO', and between it and the frame is the year of issue '2021'. The Kremnica Mint (Mincovňa Kremnica) mint mark, consisting of the letters 'MK' placed between two dies, is located on the left side of the design.
