The 2021 US 1 dollar coin from the Native American Dollar series wants to recognize American Indians who serve and have served in the Armed Forces of the United States.

Native Americans have served in the United States Armed Forces in every conflict in which the country has participated, beginning with the War of Independence. They have served a greater proportion of their population than any other ethnic group. During World War I, Native Americans volunteered to fight in staggering numbers, though most of them were not eligible for conscription. Of the 10,000 Native Americans who served in the military and the 2,000 who served in the navy, three out of four were volunteers.

Native Americans have received recognition for their service, including five Medals of Honor during World War II. His exemplary military service record continues to this day.

The reverse design depicts eagle feathers, which were traditionally earned in battle or by performing a valiant feat. Eagle feathers are revered and respected, receiving the utmost care and should be proudly displayed in homes. The stars in the foreground represent the five branches of the US military, while a circle provides an additional reference to Native Americans.

The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "NATIVE AMERICANS-DISTINGUISHED MILITARY SERVICE SINCE 1775" and "$ 1" complete the design of the artist of the Mint of the United States, Donna Weaver. The engraving on the coin corresponds to Joseph Menna.

The obverse, common to this entire series of US one dollar coins, shows Sacagawea and his son Jean Baptiste. This indigenous woman from the Shoshone tribe accompanied and guided one of the most important reconnaissance expeditions in the United States. The face of the coin reproduces the face of a current Shoshone woman named Randy'L He-dow Teton, as there is no image of Sacagawea.
