The new series of coins launched by the Austrian Mint (Münze Österreich) will once again delight numismatic collectors. Under the name "The Eyes of the World", the series will present five exceptional animals, each of which embodies a special characteristic for which it was praised in the myths and tales of past cultures. The coins manage to create an intimate contact with wonderful creatures such as the snake, the owl, the elephant, the tiger and the bear.

The eyes of the five animals featured in the series sparkle on the reverse of the five different coins, each in its own shade of sublime Swarovski crystal.

Unexpected encounters with wild animals could be traumatic events for prehistoric peoples and the sudden appearance of the bright eyes of these animals in the dark could be moments of terror. It's no wonder that animals figured prominently in their dreams or that they thought wild creatures had supernatural powers.

They imagined that animals had a special relationship with gods and some even thought that animals were gods themselves. Prehistoric peoples admired and envied wild animals, studied their characteristics, and hoped that they had abilities and qualities that could be passed on to humans.

The first coin in the series, Australia - the Creator Snake, features the Rainbow Serpent, considered by Aboriginal Australians to be the creator of the world.

The obverse of the coin features an illustration of a snake slithering through foliage. It is bordered by a dot pattern reminiscent of Australian Aboriginal dot painting.

For the Australian aborigines the world is explained through the "Time of Dreams", a time in which the earth, living beings and plants obtained their physical appearance. One of the heroes of this mythical age is the Rainbow Serpent. In almost all regions of Australia the Rainbow Serpent is seen as the creator, dreamed of as a spirit of the earth that creates mountains, valleys and the most precious and vital resource of life, water. The Rainbow Serpent is a hermaphroditic creature that is capable of reproduction. As it can shed its skin, it also represents recreation and creative development and among mythical creatures is the creative one. The human eye cannot see the actual shape of the snake. Like a rainbow, it connects heaven and earth, the physical and the metaphysical world.

The reverse of the coin is dominated by a large stylized snake head. The snake's eye is made of a refined and polished Swarovski crystal orange drop-shaped stone, from which a nuanced light is refracted. Both inspiring and resplendent, this also manages to create a sense of eye contact with the snake.
