200 Years of the Modern Railway
On 27 September 1825, George Stephenson's steam locomotive No. 1 carried hundreds of passengers across England on a 26-mile journey between Shildon, Darlington and Stockton, marking the start of a journey that would shape the modern world. This momentous journey was made possible by innovative ideas that emerged at the turn of the century.
In 1804, a 500-guineas bet (worth about £21,000 today) between two industrialists prompted Cornish engineer Richard Trevithick to build the Penydarren locomotive in South Wales, proving that steam could be used to transport coal. Four years later, Trevithick put a steam engine into operation on a circular track, but the innovative proposal failed to attract investors' money.
Trevithick’s ingenuity paved the way for the journey of Locomotion No. 1, which ran on the world’s first public steam railway and marked the beginning of the global public railway system. Since then, rail travel has seen enormous technological and engineering advances – influencing tourism, food, commerce, law and order, mail, art and even football – and continues to evolve towards a simpler, better and greener future.
The Coin
Designed by William Webb, the reverse of the UK £2 commemorative coin minted to celebrate 200 years of the modern railway captures that pivotal journey in 1825 as its central motif. The upper semicircle of the coin features the text ‘THE JOURNEY THAT CHANGED THE WORLD’. The lower half features the years ‘1825 – 2025’. The coin also features the edge inscription ‘ACTIVE LOCOMOTION NO. 1’ in tribute to the revolutionary locomotive.
The obverse features the effigy of King Charles III designed by Martin Jennings, along with inscriptions surrounding the bust. These include the coin’s face value, the year “2025” and the abbreviated Latin legend “DG REX. FD” (Dei Gratia Rex) and (Fidei Defensor), which translates as “King by the Grace of God and Defender of the Faith.”
