 1. Carol I Leu 1884-B MS63 PCGS, Bucharest mint

Carol I Leu 1884-B MS63 PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM22, Schäffer/Stambuliu-33. A strong conditional showing for this one-year type, rarely sourced in Choice or Gem states. Exhibiting serene luster and that whirls beneath a pewter patina tinted with blush tones.

Carol I Leu 1885-B AU58 PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM22, Schäffer/Stambuliu-37. Quite elusive towards the upper-tiers of preservation, this barely circulated piece sports original toning and tons of characters. The scarcer date of this two-year issue.

3. Carol I Leu 1894 MS65 PCGS, Brussels mint

Carol I Leu 1894 MS65 PCGS, Brussels mint, KM24, Schäffer/Stambuliu 41. This sought-after Gem exhibits an ideal mix of cabinet patina, cascading silky luster, and a glossy top layer. Nearly the PCGS "Top Pop" example, trailing only a single MS66. This issue features a handsome, more mature bust of the long-reigning Carol I.

5. Carol I Proof "Medallic Alignment" Leu 1906 PR66 PCGS, Brussels mint

Rare 1866-1906 Leu in Proof Format

Carol I Proof "Medallic Alignment" Leu 1906 PR66 PCGS, Brussels mint, cf. KM34, cf. Schäffer/Stambuliu-61. Reeded Edge. Medal Alignment. Clearly a coin made of special circumstances, not only does this commemorative Leu example exhibit die alignment that differs from that of the standard issue, the planchet was clearly specially prepared for its striking. Aggressive die-polish lines on each side, creating concentric circles in some areas combine with booming, blast-white brilliance that is not common for business strikes of the type. This offering marks the first 1906 Leu Proof designation from PCGS, joining a single example certified by NGC, very rare and should be of significant consequence to Romanian specialists.

6. Carol I silver Specimen Pattern Piefort Leu 1906 SP63 PCGS, Brussels mint

Carol I silver Specimen Pattern Piefort Leu 1906 SP63 PCGS, Brussels mint, KM-Pn108, Schäffer/Stambuliu-56.1.3. Dies by A. Michaux. A thoroughly pleasing example of an elusive type, even to the most advanced collectors of the Romanian series, that generates substantial bidder enthusiasm anytime these enter the market. Enticing not only as a Pattern, but struck in double-thickness that remains nearly twice as rare as it's "standard" counterpart. Autumnal hues percolate across the decidedly crisp dual portraits of Carol I, tempering what would otherwise be boisterous mint flash beneath. Besting even the Clain-Stefanelli example, we anticipate fervent interest commensurate with the current market sentiment for such Romanian rarities.

7. Carol I silver Specimen Pattern Piefort Leu 1906 SP62 PCGS, Brussels mint

Carol I silver Specimen Pattern Piefort Leu 1906 SP62 PCGS, Brussels mint, KM-Pn108, Schäffer/Stambuliu-56-1.3. The second-most valuable variety of this special issue, a shallow strike but still retaining clarity to the effigies and offering much to admire with opalescent hues in the fields. One example grades higher at PCGS.

8. Carol I Proof Leu 1910 PR64 PCGS, Hamburg mint

Carol I Proof Leu 1910 PR64 PCGS, Hamburg mint, KM42, Schäffer/Stambuliu-69a. A fabulous Proof specimen boasting dramatically watery surfaces and vibrant multi-color toning, only a few light surface abrasions preclude a Gem (or higher) grade evaluation.

9. Carol I silver Specimen Pattern Essai Leu 1914 SP67 PCGS, Paris mint

Carol I silver Specimen Pattern Essai Leu 1914 SP67 PCGS, Paris mint, KM-E7, Schäffer/Stambuliu-74-1.1. Tied for the highest grade assigned by either grading service for this sought-after Essai type. Baked in polychromatic hues favoring emerald and scarlet, all bolstered by bubbling bloom from beneath. Absolutely beautiful in hand.

10. Carol I silver Specimen Pattern 2 Lei 1869 SP62 PCGS, Heaton mint

Carol I silver Specimen Pattern 2 Lei 1869 SP62 PCGS, Heaton mint, KM-Pn27, cf. Schäffer/Stambuliu-13.1.1 (there as plain edge). An awe-inspiring Pattern and a pleasing companion to the previous lot, both of which display a subtle nacreous tone enlivened upon illumination, and possibly even housed together for a duration of their respective histories. Only a single other specimen of this date and denomination has been located in the last two decades through a brief auction review, making this opportunity to acquire any example, let alone at near-Choice preservation, of the utmost importance to the advanced Romanian collector.
