Malta has already defined and announced all the coins it will issue during 2025. Among them, the two commemorative 2 euro coins stand out, considered the most collected pieces in all of Europe. If everything goes according to plan, they will be available from May.

The first coin corresponds to the second issue of the series launched in 2024, entitled “Walled Cities of Malta”, and this year it will be dedicated to the “City of Mdina”.

The second coin, which could also be considered part of a series, follows the line of the one issued last year in honour of the “Malta Bee”. This year, it will be dedicated to the “Maltese Ox”, thus forming part of a collection called “Native Species”.

City of Mdina

Mdina, known as the “Silent City”, is a historic walled city located in the centre of Malta. It was the ancient capital of the island and has origins dating back over 4,000 years, with Phoenician, Roman, Arab and Norman influences.

Mdina is known for its medieval and baroque architecture, narrow, quiet streets, and panoramic views from its walls. Its main attractions include St. Paul's Cathedral, Vilhena Palace, and its majestic gates, which have been the setting for film productions.

Today, Mdina is a popular tourist destination and a living testimony to Malta's rich history.

The centre of the coin features a detailed depiction of the city of Mdina, highlighting its walls, historic buildings and the domes of its churches, elements that symbolise its rich history and architecture. On the top left is the inscription “MDINA”. At the bottom centre is “MALTA”, along with the year of issue, “2025”.

The issue volume of this coin will be 147,000 units, distributed as follows: 100,000 in rolls of 25 coins, 40,000 in coincards, and 7,000 included in a thematic euroset, which will also contain the eight regular circulation coins with a mint date of 2025.

Maltese Ox

The Maltese Ox, also known as Il-Baqra Maltija in Maltese, is a native breed of cattle from Malta, valued for its historical, cultural and agricultural importance in the archipelago. This medium-sized animal, generally light brown in colour, has been bred for centuries on the island, adapting perfectly to local conditions.

In ancient times, the Maltese Ox was primarily used for agricultural work and as a source of meat and milk, playing a crucial role in Malta's rural economy. However, with time and the modernisation of agriculture, its population has declined dramatically, making it an endangered species.

In recent years, the Maltese Ox has gained attention as a symbol of Malta's natural heritage. It is an emblem of sustainability and biodiversity, and its conservation has become a priority to preserve the country's cultural and biological heritage.

The centre of the coin features the figure of a Maltese ox, depicted in profile, in a detailed style that highlights its robust physical features. Above the figure is inscribed the text “IL-ĠENDUS MALTI”, which means “The Maltese Ox” in Maltese. Below the ox are the word “MALTA” and the year of issue, “2025”.

The issuance volume of this coin will be 140,000 units, distributed as follows: 100,000 in rolls of 25 coins and 40,000 in coincards.
