Câteva monede românești într-o licitație Heritage Auction XXXII g - 24.01.2025

 1. Carol I 5 Lei 1881-B UNC Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Bucharest mint

Carol I 5 Lei 1881-B UNC Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM17.1, Schäffer/Stambuliu-24d. Lettered Edge w/ 6 Stars. A pristine, nearly Proof-quality specimen with chiseled design detail, evidence of multiple strikes, and significant brilliance despite a very light past cleaning. A 19th Century Romanian "Crown" that is prized in high-grade, and though this example includes a conditional qualifier to its Mint State status, the special qualities of this coin are very evident in-hand.

2. Carol I 5 Lei 1881-B UNC Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Bucharest mint

Carol I 5 Lei 1881-B UNC Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM16, Schäffer/Stambuliu-24. Reeded edge variety. A popular type that always excites collectors, regardless of preservation, embellished by traces of polychromatic toning that gently obscure PCGS's conditional modifier.

3. Carol I 5 Lei 1882-B MS63 PCGS, Bucharest mint

Carol I 5 Lei 1882-B MS63 PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM17.1, Schäffer/Stambuliu-27. Lavishly preserved and dripping with satiny quality to the sepia-infused surfaces, examples of this date find themselves exceedingly scarce at any preservation, let alone decidedly Choice. Every element on the reverse coat-of-arms appears unscathed, helping to lift this issue to its status as the only Mint State piece certified by PCGS, remaining tied for the finest with two others at NGC. With this in mind, we expect only the quality-conscious collector to seriously consider the trophy at hand.

4. Carol I 5 Lei 1883-B UNC Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Bucharest mint

Carol I 5 Lei 1883-B UNC Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM17.1, Schäffer/Stambuliu-29a. Crown with 2 dots variety. Decorated in exquisite patination with a polychromatic ring around the peripherals that fades to a monotone silver in the center. Despite the conditional qualifier, the piece retains magnificent details and ample mint bloom.

5. Carol I 5 Lei 1884-B MS61 PCGS, Brussels mint

Carol I 5 Lei 1884-B MS61 PCGS, Brussels mint, KM17.1, Schäffer/Stambuliu-34. A minimally available type that provides instant verification of additional care and attention to detail that accompanied the piece's production. Punctuated by an argent backdrop and accented by subtle traces of blue and green that leave a proud patrician impression, the offering at hand is a clear product of special circumstances. Every engraved device remains fully embossed on the planchet beneath, where even finer conditional examples don't relay nearly as much detail in Carol's beard, evincing Specimen-like qualities only seen in presentation pieces. Of the handful currently submitted to both PCGS and NGC, 3 examples find themselves 1 and 2-points finer, none showcasing a matte-cameo appearance as witnessed here, making this a seldom-seen opportunity to own an example so fine.

6. Carol I 5 Lei 1885-B MS62 PCGS, Bucharest mint

Carol I 5 Lei 1885-B MS62 PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM17.1, Schäffer/Stambuliu-38. With a mintage of only 40,000 and the commercial activity often required of this workhorse type, we hardly ever see an example this well preserved, appearing conservatively graded at that. Soft pastels interweave with lavender to project an eminently pleasing appearance, and fully elevated by a gentle underlying mint glow. Currently, none certify finer at PCGS and will command a premium as such.

7. Carol I 5 Lei 1901-B MS63+ PCGS, Hamburg mint

Carol I 5 Lei 1901-B MS63+ PCGS, Hamburg mint, KM17.2, Schäffer/Stambuliu-54. Punctuated by a "+" superlative, an indication of the boldness of the surface luster, which is encased by an even layer of russet around the peripherals. Some bagging and a minor rim ding prohibit what would otherwise be a Gem designation, noted for the sake of completeness, but do little to diminish the advanced visual appeal of the current offering. The only date in the series minted in Hamburg and struck on a fractionally larger planchet than the other dates, and most deserving of additional consideration.

8. Carol I 5 Lei 1906 MS63 PCGS, Brussels mint

Carol I 5 Lei 1906 MS63 PCGS, Brussels mint, KM35, Schäffer/Stambuliu- 62. 40th Anniversary - Reign of Carol I. A lovely example of this Crown-size commemorative issue, very desirable at this Choice tier of Mint State. The obverse luster and patina are especially attractive.

9. Carol I gold "40th Anniversary of Reign" 12-1/2 Lei 1906 MS63 PCGS, Brussels mint

Carol I gold "40th Anniversary of Reign" 12-1/2 Lei 1906 MS63 PCGS, Brussels mint, KM36, Schäffer/Stambuliu-63. One year type issued for the 40th anniversary of Carol I's reign. A decidedly Choice example for a type often beset by excessive bagging. The obverse regalia and reverse feathers display virtually no wear.

10. Carol I gold Specimen Pattern 20 Lei 1868

Famed Choice Rarity of the Romanian Series

Carol I gold Specimen Pattern 20 Lei 1868 SP63 Deep Cameo PCGS, KM-Pn12, cf. Schäffer/Stambuliu-10.1.1. Without the 'c' mintmark in exergue. Plain edge. One of the most celebrated rarities in all of Romanian numismatics and the single finest piece known at either major grading service, with a lesser example selling in our January 2024 NYCINC auction for $336,000 all-in. Prior to that, this type was last seen in May 2014 when Baldwin's sold an uncertified, lightly scratched example from the Åke Lindén collection, realizing $110,000 plus buyer's premium. The present offering earns a Choice designation due in part to its great surface quality, whereas the two previous examples noted showcase more pronounced wisps. Further elevating this specimen are highly frosted Deep Cameo surfaces and immaculately preserved devices that evince virtually no rub and that ooze opulence from the freshly polished dies. This is perfectly centered with no detracting marks or rim imperfections. 100 minted but far fewer are estimated to survive, with those in major collections and museums typically faring as "circulated," with the current example as the finest this cataloger is aware of.

The story of this intriguing emission per Schäffer and Stambuliu is very powerful, as it was commissioned in great secrecy from dies abroad and issued as a symbol of Romania's monetary sovereignty and independence against the wishes of the Ottoman Empire. Not only does it carry Carol I's effigy as the chief of the Romanian State, but the legend CAROL I DOMNULU ROMÂNILORU translates to "Carol I Ruler of Romanians" and this caused an uproar from the Ottomans. In the wake of much protest against these signs of defiance and apparent ambitions of national independence, the Romanian Government stopped the minting and brought into country only 100 of the Proof coins. It is purported that Carol deposited about 50 pieces at the foundation of the Peles Castle, and gave the rest to his Government minsters and his personal friends.
