Another commemorative 2 euro coin that is announced to be issued this same month of January, specifically on the 30th, is the Estonian coin, which in 2025 celebrates the "500th Anniversary of the First Printed Text in Estonian."

About the motive of the coin

The first printed text in Estonian was a Lutheran hymnal published in 1525 in Wittenberg, Germany. This text represented a fundamental step in the history of the Estonian language and culture, as it enabled the written dissemination of the language at a time when the Protestant Reformation encouraged the translation of religious texts into vernacular languages.

Although no copies survive, the 1525 hymnal marked the beginning of the Estonian print tradition. This event symbolises the beginning of the use of Estonian in written contexts and reflects the reformers' efforts to integrate Estonian communities into religious life through their language.

The Coin

The design of the coin was created following a competition held for the occasion by the Bank of Estonia, which chose the coin submitted by Svetlin Balezdrov, who symbolises Estonian literary tradition.

The centre of the coin, dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the Estonian book, features four stylised books forming the letter E, surrounded by the inscription “Eesti raamat 500” and the years 1525 and 2025.

Date and volume of issue

As I said at the beginning, the coin will be issued on January 30th. The issue volume is 850,000 pieces, of which 8,500, in BU quality, are presented in a coin card as you can see in the image.
