Much more than a pioneering architect, Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky was a pioneering woman in a male-dominated field, an ambassador for humane architecture, a woman of great social commitment and a courageous resistance fighter against the Nazis. The third gold coin in the Unsung Heroes of Austria series pays tribute to her extraordinary life's work and her unwavering strength of character.
Born in Vienna in 1897, Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky lived a long and eventful life until she died 102 years later in the same neighbourhood in which she was born. She went down in history as one of the first women to study architecture in Austria. Her most famous innovation, the Frankfurt kitchen, is considered the prototype of the modern fitted kitchen. Designed in 1926, this kitchen was a functional design based on labour-saving criteria that revolutionised housework. Installed in around 10,000 flats, the Frankfurt kitchen remains a prime example of well-thought-out architecture to this day.
Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky was also the only woman to have been involved in the design of the pioneering Wiener Werkbundsiedlung architects' association, fought for decent housing and demonstrated unparalleled courage in resisting the Nazi regime, for which she almost paid with her life. A student of architect Adolf Loos, after the Second World War she organised exhibitions, took part in international architectural congresses, promoted social architecture and was also involved in the peace and women's movements. Her commitment was recognised in the form of numerous awards.
This gold coin reflects the essence of Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky's life and work. The obverse features a portrait of the architect in front of a stylised plan.
The reverse side features a collage-like image of the Frankfurt kitchen, just 1.9 metres wide, and a portrait of the young aspiring architect, in which Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky confidently displays the strength she retained into old age. As the contemporary Viennese architect Christine Zwingl put it: “Her courage, her joy of life, her warmth of heart and her humour influenced many people.”

About the series Anonymous Heroines of Austria
The series is dedicated to five great Austrian women who received very little recognition for their achievements in the arts and sciences: Tina Blau, Veza Canetti, Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, Hilde Loewe-Flatter and Lise Meitner. The stories of these five women are told in how they managed to excel in environments that remained exclusively male-dominated.
