Câteva monede românești într-o licitație Heritage Auction XXXII f - 24.01.2025

 1. Carol I Proof 2 Lei 1872 PR63 PCGS, Brussels mint

Special 2 Lei of 1872 in Proof

Carol I Proof 2 Lei 1872 PR63 PCGS, Brussels mint, KM8, Schäffer/Stambuliu-7. For offer here is a significant Romanian rarity. Occasionally the Pattern version of this single-year issue, which includes the word "Essai" below the wreath on the reverse, surfaces for auction but this cataloger could find no comparable auction results for the Proof version of the standard circulation design. This lot also represents the only example of its kind at either PCGS or NGC. The design detail on the obverse shield is staggering, the reverse portrays heavy horizontal die-polish, and the glossy satin luster easily bursts forth from the light patination. A special opportunity for the most selective of collectors to acquire a true rarity.

2. Carol I 2 Lei 1873-(b) MS63 PCGS, Bucharest mint

Carol I 2 Lei 1873-(b) MS63 PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM8, Schäffer/Stambuliu-10. Coin alignment. Boasting the second-finest grade awarded by the major certification companies, only one MS65 ranked better at NGC. Tinted with soft pearl and blush hues, capped by some grade-commensurate chatter.

3. Carol I Specimen Pattern 2 Lei 1881-(b) SP64 PCGS, Bucharest mint

Unique Pattern 2 Lei of 1881

Carol I Specimen Pattern 2 Lei 1881-(b) SP64 PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM-Pn41, Schäffer/Stambuliu-29. (this coin). A piece of unmistakable beauty and rarity; this unique Pattern striking of the 1881 2 Lei, distinguished from it's Vienna circulation counterpart via not only a "B" mintmark, but the quality in its production and preservation, is sure to be among the most coveted specimens from the entirety of this impressive and exhaustive collection. Lavishly and carefully struck, resulting in near-medallic features that project boldly towards the viewer with matte-like qualities, this superior Bucharest product maintains a palpable visual allure hard to surpass. Flashes of originality glisten throughout, tempered by a lavender-tinged pewter patina likely developed through long-time storage in an advanced cabinet. Nary a visual distraction is of note, with only the occasional wisp to preclude a full Gem status. With so few unique pieces of Romanian origin, the only comparable example we've been able to locate in recent decades was the unique 1881 Leu Pattern, also certified SP64 with less aesthetic character hammering at $30,000, we anticipate specialists and trophy-hunters alike to take aim at the offering at hand.

4. Carol I 2 Lei 1881-V MS64 PCGS, Vienna mint

Coveted Carol I 2 Lei in Near-Gem

Carol I 2 Lei 1881-V MS64 PCGS, Vienna mint, KM15, Schäffer/Stambuliu-22. Very nearly the PCGS "Top Pop" specimen of this Vienna mint production that is extremely scarce at such a distinguished level of conservation. The obverse is cloaked in attractive mottled, old-time silver toning while the reverse exhibits more of the original argent brilliance. A choice specimen worthy of significant attention from those looking to acquire an esteemed example of this one-year issue.

5. Carol I Proof 2 Lei 1910 PR63 PCGS, Brussels mint

Carol I Proof 2 Lei 1910 PR63 PCGS, Brussels mint, KM43, Schäffer/Stambuliu-70. A fabulous example of this classic 20th Century Romanian design seldom encountered in Proof format. The sole Proof certified by PCGS and one of the nicer certified Proof examples extant overall. This offering is bursting with unbridled luster and most certainly would be eligible for a finer technical designation if not for an abrasion in the field behind Carol's head.

6. Carol I 2 Lei 1911 MS65 PCGS, Hamburg mint

Carol I 2 Lei 1911 MS65 PCGS, Hamburg mint, KM43, Schäffer/Stambuliu-73. A gorgeously toned Gem Mint beauty displaying luxurious pearl-silver centers and vibrant multi-color accents surrounding the raised motifs. Difficult to locate in as nice of condition as is presented here.

7. Carol I silver Specimen Pattern Essai 2 Lei 1914 SP66+ PCGS, Paris mint

Carol I silver Specimen Pattern Essai 2 Lei 1914 SP66+ PCGS, Paris mint, Schäffer/Stambuliu-075.1.1. By Charles Pillet. Exceedingly scarce and made all the more collectable because of its majestic presentation that boasts bewitching swirls of prismatic coloration. We have not handled anything even approaching this quality in a decade, besting our McFadden example by a full 1-1/2 points and the next finest by a 1/2 grade-point, so an opportunity like this might not present itself again for quite some time.

8. Carol I 5 Lei 1880-B MS63 PCGS, Bucharest mint

Carol I 5 Lei 1880-B MS63 PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM12, Schäffer/Stambuliu-18. Engraver's name at truncation. A slightly scarcer variety or this already difficult date to locate in Mint State, distinguished by the placement of Kullrich's signature below the truncation as opposed to near the beading. Lovely pastels coat the sepia-infused surfaces on this conditionally scarce type, while the undisturbed waves in the King's beard indicate the quality of preservation. This type almost never appears at auction this nice, with the last we handled of this type in comparable preserving being the MS65 Cape Coral example in 2021.

9. Carol I 5 Lei 1880-B MS63 PCGS, Bucharest mint

Carol I 5 Lei 1880-B MS63 PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM12, Schäffer/Stambuliu-18a. Engravers name near beading. A crowd-pleasing type, particularly in this condition. The largely untoned fields amplify the portrait relief, permitting an unfettered view of the impressive engraving work. Devoid of significant hairlining, this Choice survivor shares the top spot at PCGS.

10. Carol I 5 Lei 1881-B MS65 PCGS, Bucharest mint

Carol I 5 Lei 1881-B MS65 PCGS, Bucharest mint, KM17.1, Schäffer/Stambuliu-24b. Edge: 5 Stars. Unrelentingly beautiful; blessed by a sandalwood mosaic, an undercurrent of amber, and bronze highlights, this Gem sits at the top of the PCGS census by a full four points. Among the most original 5 Leis this cataloger has had the privilege of handling and already a challenge to find uncirculated, the opportunity to own such a premier example will not go unnoticed by serious collectors.
