After the issue of the first commemorative 2 euro coin in 2024 by the Vatican dedicated to the “750th Anniversary of the death of Thomas Aquinas”, we will have a second Vatican coin of this type on a date yet to be determined, to celebrate the “150th Anniversary of the birth of Guglielmo Marconi”. Of this last one I offer you today a first image and some additional information.

Guglielmo Marconi, the person to whom the coin is dedicated, was born in Bologna in 1874. He was an Italian electronic engineer who contributed to the development of long-distance radio transmission and wireless telegraphy, and was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909 for his advances in this field. His connection with the Vatican was the construction of Vatican Radio on behalf of Pius XI. The station began broadcasting on 12 February 1931.

The design features Marconi’s portrait in the centre, portraits of Pope Pius XI on the right and the future Pius XII on the left, with radio waves crossing over the figures. At the top left, in a semicircle, is the legend “GUGLIELMO MARCONI”, and below, the dates “1874” and “2024”. At the bottom is the legend “CITTÀ DEL VATICANO”, followed by the name of the artist, “L. PANCOTTO” (Loredana Pancotto). On the left is the mint mark “R”.

As I said at the beginning, the issue date has not been announced, but we do know the issue volume, which amounts to 82,900 coins.
