The Bank of Greece has recently issued a new silver collector coin with a face value of 10 euros, intended to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Athens 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

One hundred and eight years after their first modern re-enactment in Greece, the Olympic Games returned home in 2004, with the XXVIII Summer Olympic Games in Athens. The Games were held in several Olympic venues in Attica and its regions, while the shot put event took place in the stadium of Ancient Olympia, in honour of the birthplace of the games. 10,625 athletes from 201 countries took part.

Greece won 16 medals (6 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze) at the Olympic Games and 11 (1 gold, 3 silver and 7 bronze) at the Paralympic Games held in September. The organisation of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games was a highly complex and demanding undertaking, requiring a huge mobilisation of the Greek economy and society, with the help of an unprecedented mass of volunteers.

The legacy of the 2004 Olympic Games, in addition to the valuable knowledge that was acquired, includes modern Olympic facilities as well as numerous construction and infrastructure projects that were built or accelerated for the occasion.

The reverse of the coin shows a Hellenistic design of two athletes in the central circle, against the full-colour Greek flag, with a stadium in the background. Below the athletes, the mint mark appears, at the bottom, the year of issue “2024” and the inscription of the coin’s theme surrounding the composition “ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗEΣ AΘΛHTIKEΣ EΠITYXIEΣ 20 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ META”.

On the obverse, the face of Croesus' Kuros is depicted. On the right half of his face we can see several schematic figures running alongside the designer's signature "ΣΤΑΜ" (Geórgios Stamatópoulos). On the left side of the composition we can see the name "KOYPOΣ" (kouros), above it the face value of the coin "10 EΥΡΩ" (10 euro), and the small Greek coat of arms.
