The Bank of Greece has issued a new collector's coin, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Samos, a naval battle fought on 5 August 1824 off the Greek island of Samos during the Greek War of Independence.
In 1824, Sultan Mahmut ordered Admiral Hosref Pasha to suppress the revolution in the Aegean islands. Led by Khosref, the Ottoman fleet, which had retreated to Lesbos after the destruction of Psara in June, set sail on 28 July for Samos. The Greek fleet, consisting of two squadrons under the command of Georgios Shaktouris and Andreas Miaoulis, was quick to stop them.
After several days of fighting, the two fleets met in the decisive battle on 5 August off the island of Samos. The Greek fire ships, commanded by Konstantinos Kanaris, managed to burn three enemy ships. Under intense fire from the Greek ships' guns, Hosref Pasha was forced to retreat. The Battle of Samos, together with the Battle of Gerontas which took place on 29 August, saved the island and marked an important victory for the Greeks.
The obverse of the coin shows, in the centre, a representation of a rudder, a cannon and a ship's anchor against a background of sea waves. In the centre of the rudder is the face value of the coin: 5 ΕΥΡΩ. On the edge are the inscriptions: 200 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗ ΝΑΥΜΑΧΙΑ ΤΗΣ ΣΑΜΟΥ. At the bottom are the mint mark and the year of issue "2024".
The reverse of the coin shows in the centre the coat of arms of the Hellenic Republic, surrounded by the name of the country: ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΉ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΊΑ. The coat of arms is surrounded by a laurel wreath.
