The Bank of Hungary is issuing a new collector coin with a face value of 3,000 forints to commemorate “50 years of the Rubik’s Cube” and to coincide with the 80th birthday of Ernő Rubik Jr., the man who invented and created this famous puzzle. The coin focuses on the world-famous puzzle and presents the working principle of this creation.

The three-dimensional mechanical puzzle, originally patented under the name Magic Cube on December 31, 1977, was developed in the spring of 1974 by Ernő Rubik Jr. The creator quickly realized that this teaching aid, also excellent for demonstrating spatial movement, had the potential to become an exciting game, simple and complex, individual and social at the same time. The patent description reads as follows: “The essence of the invention lies in the fact that the 27 pieces that make up the large cube can be rearranged into new positions without disassembling the large cube. To achieve this, a single homologous operation is necessary: the rotation of one of the nine small cubes that make up any side of the large cube.”

After the logic puzzle was renamed in the 1980s, the Rubik's Cube conquered the world within just a few years under its new name. The first Rubik's Cube tournament was held on 5 June 1982 and has been held every two years since 2003. The Rubik's Cube is considered one of the greatest and most successful Hungarian inventions. Its popularity is demonstrated by the fact that its worldwide sales exceed 500 million.

The obverse of the coin features a Rubik's cube, whose characteristic colours are symbolised by heraldic stripes. The obverse contains the obligatory design elements of Hungarian collector coins: the inscription "MAGYARORSZÁG" (HUNGARY) is aligned on the left side; the denomination "3000" and the inscription "FORINT" are aligned at the bottom of the right side. To the left of the horizontal axis of symmetry is the mint mark "BP." and to the right is the year of issue "2024."

The reverse of the coin depicts the internal structure of the Rubik's Cube; below it, aligned with the lower right and left sides of the obverse, is the inscription 'RUBIK-KOCKA' (RUBIK'S CUBE). On the right side is inserted the Hungarian version of the Rubik's Cube logo of Spin Master Toys UK Limited, designed for the anniversary. The company also owns the rights to the Rubik's Cube. The lower peak bears the mark of designer András Szilos.
