Dedicated to celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe, which will be held in 2024, Luxembourg issues a silver collector's coin with a face of 25 euros, of which only 1,000 pieces have been minted.
The Council of Europe advocates freedom of expression and of the media, freedom of assembly, equality and the protection of minorities. It has carried out campaigns on issues such as the protection of children, hate speech on the Internet, and the rights of the Roma people, who constitute the largest minority in Europe. The Council of Europe helps member states fight corruption and terrorism, and undertake judicial reforms. Its group of constitutional experts, known as the Venice Commission, provides legal advice to countries worldwide.
The Council of Europe promotes human rights through international conventions, such as the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, and the Convention against Cybercrime. It monitors the progress made by Member States in these areas, and makes recommendations through specialized and independent supervisory bodies. The member states of the Council of Europe no longer apply the death penalty.
