Continuing with the issuance of the series of pieces called "Tales from my childhood", the Bank of Lithuania will launch another of these coins on May 22, which on this occasion will be dedicated to the Lithuanian fairy tale titled "The Twelve." brothers, the twelve black crows.
"The Twelve Brothers, Twelve Black Crows" is a well-known Lithuanian folk tale about a sister searching for her enchanted brothers who have been turned into black crows. Black crows symbolize a mysterious and magical world that is not easy to enter. This fairy tale highlights the importance of cooperation, perseverance and determination to overcome challenges, it is a valuable teaching tool that transmits these values and morals to future generations.
Once again, the coin issued will be available in two versions with the same design: one of them will be minted in silver, will have colored elements and its face value will be €5, while the second version will be cheaper, minted in Cupro-nickel will have a face value of €1.50.
The reverse of the coin features the silhouette of the main character of the fairy tale (the sister) and the symbolic figures of her twelve brothers, the black crows, descending and becoming human beings. The symbolic tattoo (the tree of life) located on the sister's back is a representation of the key moments in her life: birds, winds, clouds, a mountain, children, a bonfire and a crown are all shown with Lithuanian folk ornaments, reinforcing the mystical plot of the fairy tale. The composition is surrounded by the inscription “Dvylika brolių, juodvarniais lakstančių” (The twelve brothers, the twelve black crows).
The obverse of the piece features a knitted “fabric” featuring the main motif of the fairy tale, the inscription of the issuing country “Lietuva” (Lithuania) and a symbolic silhouette of Vytis. The composition, alluding to a cozy evening in which fairy tales are told, is surrounded by small stars and the moon itself. Also appearing on both sides of the fabric are: the face value of the coin “€5”, the mint mark of the Lithuanian Mint and the year of issue “2024”.
Likewise, the edge of the cupro-nickel coin is striated, while the edge of the silver coin is decorated with small bunnies.
This second, cheaper version in cupro-nickel can be purchased in Lithuanian banks at a price of €2.50, while the colored silver coin has a price of €65.
