The Austrian Mint, Münze Österreich, has started a new collection this May under the name "The Beauty of the Universe." This collection, made up of five 20 euro silver coins, aims to show with great beauty the different and spectacular phenomena that take place in the universe. Each of these five pieces has a different ingenious shape to perfectly illustrate its respective astronomical phenomenon.

The complete collection consists of the following coins:

2024: Supernova
2025: Einstein Ring
2026: Cat's Eye Nebula
2027: Gravitational wave
2028: Protostar

Coin 2024 – Supernova

Therefore, the first coin in the series, issued this month of May, is dedicated to the explosion of a Supernova, a phenomenon that was recorded for the first time nearly a thousand years ago.

The year was 1054 and the Chinese and Arab astronomers who observed the phenomenon noticed a brightness that increased at a remarkable speed. This was the result of something we now know was caused by the massive explosion of a star with a mass approximately ten times that of the Sun itself, a phenomenon we now know is a supernova.

After millions of years, the star in question had run out of “fuel” from hydrogen nuclei and, stabilized throughout its life by the pressure created by the nuclear fusion that was taking place within it, had collapsed under the effect. of its own gravity. This occurred first in the outer layers before rebounding explosively. Since then, the stellar remnant and wind pulsar, known as the Crab Nebula, has been moving away from the former center of the explosion at a speed of several million kilometers per hour.

At the center of the Crab Nebula is a small, rotating neutron star known as the Crab Pulsar. Thanks to its magnetic field, the Crab Pulsar emits large amounts of energy and illuminates the Crab Nebula. Doing so creates the amazing cosmic spectacle of the supernova.

Its convex reverse features a beautiful full-color illustration of the Crab Nebula, based on an image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. Above this, in the upper left edge, the inscription "SUPERNOVA" is also shown.

On the other hand, the obverse of the piece again has the image of the Crab Nebula, a remnant of the supernova observed in 1054, which is located about 6,500 light years from Earth and has a size of around 11×7 Light years. The inscription "NGC 1952" indicates the catalog name of the Crab Nebula. Also referenced in the center of the coin is the rapidly rotating Crab Pulsar, a source of cosmic radiation.
