Today, March 8, International Women's Day is celebrated, the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre – Real Casa de la Moneda wants to join the celebrations with the issuance of a silver collector coin, in homage to María de Maeztu.

María de Maeztu y Whitney was born in Vitoria in 1881 and died in Mar de Plata (Argentina) in 1948. She was an active woman, a tireless traveler, an entrepreneur and with a vision of the future. Feminist and defender of women's suffrage, she participated in some of the most important initiatives promoted by and for women.

In 1902 she obtained a teaching position in a Santander school. In 1915 she was director of the female group "Residencia de Estudiantes", where she carried out outstanding work in favor of higher education for women and their incorporation into active life. She obtained various awards and recognitions such as an honorary doctorate from Smith College and an honorary professor from the University of Mexico.

On the reverse of the coin appears the image «María de Maeztu, doctor honoris causa by Smith College, 1919», which is preserved in the Archive of the Residencia de Señoritas (José Ortega y Gasset-Gregorio Marañón Foundation); to its left the symbol of the woman, the face value 10 euro and the Mint mark. Surrounding these motifs and legends, the legends 8-M International Women's Day and María de Maeztu appear.

The obverse reproduces the portrait to the left of His Majesty King Felipe VI. In the upper part, in a circular sense and in capital letters, the legend Felipe VI King of Spain appears. At the bottom, between two dots, the year of issue 2023. Surrounding the motifs and legends is a pearl pattern.
