The Bank of Greece announces the issuance, for the second half of this month, of a 10-euro silver collector's coin with a face dedicated to Philo's Automatic Maid, humanity's first functional robot created by the engineer, inventor and writer Greek Philo of Byzantium. Thus becoming the second coin in the “Ancient Greek Technology” series.
The invention of the automaton is described in the Pneumatics of Philo of Byzantium, an engineer from the 3rd century BC. C. who lived in Alexandria. This robot was in the form of a life-size maid, and it held a jug of wine in its right hand. Inside the effigy were two tanks, one for wine and one for water (since the Greeks used to drink diluted wine), and a mechanism consisting of liquid and air tubes.
By placing a cup in the servant's outstretched left hand, the mechanism began to work. Air pressure pushed liquids (first wine and then water) through the right arm into the pitcher and finally into the cup.
On the obverse of the coin we can see as the main motif Philo's automaton robot in full operation, serving a glass of wine while we see its internal mechanism. In the shape of a semicircle, surrounding the central image of the coin, appear the inscriptions “ΑΡΧΑΙΑ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΤΕΧΝΟΛΟΓΙΑ – Η ΑΥΤΟΜΑΤΗ ΘΕΡΑΠΑΙΝΙΔΑ” (Ancient Greek automatic technology). The year of issue 2023 is shown on the left side, and the mint mark on the right side of the semicircle.
The reverse of the coin shows, in the foreground and on a background full of mechanisms, the coat of arms of Greece surrounded by the text "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΉ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΊΑ" (Hellenic Republic) and the face value 10 EYPΩ (10 Euro).
The coin is presented in this case, accompanied by its corresponding certificate of authenticity. The selling price of this coin in Greece is €80.
