Austria will issue this February 15 a gold coin dedicated to the painter ahead of her time, Tina Blau, belonging to the new collection "Anonymous Heroines of Austria" that she has just released in depth.

The new series is dedicated to the five great Austrian women who received very little recognition for their achievements in the arts and sciences: Tina Blau, Veza Canetti, Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, Hilde Loewe-Flatter, and Lise Meitner. The stories of how these five women managed to excel in environments that were still exclusive to men are shown.

Tina Blau was born in Vienna in 1845, at that time aspiring painters had to resort to private classes, since there were no official training opportunities for them. But she Blau was lucky to have the support of her father. Not content with working in a studio, she painted landscapes at a time when plein-air painting was not very popular and she was one of the first Austrian artists to travel through Austria and other European countries in search of new subjects.

Characterized by the rediscovery of Biedermeier realism, her style also displayed impressionistic tendencies. In 1882 she painted her masterpiece Spring in the Prater, in the Viennese park meadows. In 1883 she moved to Munich, where she taught at the Association of Women Artists, and in 1897 she helped found the Wiener Frauenakademie, an art school for women in Vienna, where she taught until 1915.

On the obverse of the coin we can see an image of Tina Blau taken from a photograph of her youth, with a broad brushstroke dominating the background of the coin.

While the reverse of the coin appears decorated with trees and flowers. The right side of this composition focuses on the landscape painting for which Tina Blau became famous, and the portraits of the two women on the left allude to her time as a professor at the Wiener Frauenakademie.
