The Bank of Ukraine will issue a commemorative medal on February 28 to honor the deeds, heroics and resilience that the residents of Volnovaja have shown during the defense of the city from Russian attacks.
Volnovaja has been at war since May 2014, while during the full-scale invasion, the city found itself on the front lines of fierce fighting. The city, which is located on important routes connecting Mariupol with Donetsk and with Zaporizhia. Relentless air raids and shelling destroyed the entire infrastructure of the city, leaving it virtually wiped out and occupied.
On the obverse of the medal appears, at the top, the semicircular legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine), below which are the coat of arms of Ukraine and the year of issue of the medal "2023". In the center, on a plain background, is the legend МІСТО/ВОЛНОВАХА/ГЕРОЇВ (city/Volnovaja/heroes), in the word Volnovakha, the Ukrainian letter “н” is replaced by a fragment of railway, which reaches up to the small Ukraine's coat of arms and represents the city's desire to return home to Ukraine. There are also fragments of maps of Donetsk (above) and Mariupol (below), and below, on the right, is the mintmark of the NBU Banknote Minting and Printing Factory.
While on the reverse of the medal we see an image of a Ukrainian soldier (on the left) and stylized elements of the Volnovaja coat of arms. In the background, a curved line appears, symbolizing Volnovaja's location on one of the highest places in the Azov Upland, and a wavy line with fountains, representing the Volnovaja River, whose name is derived from the large number of springs in the zone. We also see a bird and its reflection on a smooth background, which symbolizes the confidence of the people that the city will be free.
