On February 15, 2023, the Czech National Bank issued a commemorative 200 CZK silver coin on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the birth of linguist Jan Blahoslav.
Jan Blahoslav was born on February 20, 1523 in Přerov. During his life he was engaged in many activities. He was a priest and bishop of the Unity of the Brothers, which developed and fostered understanding with other churches. He dedicated his life to the defense and development of education and fundamentally to the development of language as a means of understanding. He wrote works such as "Bohemian Grammar" and was the author of the first Czech syllabary. He was the first person in history to translate the New Testament from Greek. He died at the age of 48 in Moravské Krumlov.
The obverse of the coin shows a composition of the spine and cover of the book Gramatika česká, from 1571. A symbolic cross has been added to the cover. On the spine of the book is the text “ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA ♦ 200 Kč”. The Czech Mint mark, in the form of the letters “Č” and “M”, is located on the bottom of the coin.
The composition of the obverse is maintained on the reverse of the coin. On the back there is a portrait of Jan Blahoslav instead of the book cover and on the spine of it is written "1523 ♦ JAN BLAHOSLAV ♦ 2023". The designer Vojtěch Dostál's initial - an inverted letter "D" - is located at the bottom of the coin.
The coin is minted with an alloy containing 925 parts of silver and 75 parts of copper and is issued in two versions, BU quality and Proof quality. which differ in surface treatment and edge marking. The proof quality coins feature a highly polished field, matt relief and a smooth edge with the Czech inscription “ČESKÁ NÁRODNÍ BANKA * Ag 0.925 * 13 g *”. BU quality coins have a grooved edge. The coin measures 31mm in diameter, weighs 13g and is 2.2mm thick.
