Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943) was a pianist and composer who became a recognized symbol of Russian music throughout the world.

Graduated from the Moscow Conservatory as a pianist and composer, he won the Great Gold Medal for his opera in one act "Aleko". Tchaikovsky praised the opera and recommended it for staging at the Bolshoi Theatre.

The young Rachmaninoff quickly became a favorite with the Moscow public, appreciated as a talented pianist, composer and conductor.
He toured Europe, the United States and Canada. Rachmaninoff became director of the Bolshoi Theatre, where he was responsible for the entire Russian opera repertoire for several seasons and headed the Arts Council of the Russian Music Publishing House.
