On February 21, the Italian Mint, Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, will issue a gold coin dedicated to the Fountain of Diana and Actaeon located in the Royal Palace of Caserta, a piece belonging to the "Fountains of Italy" collection. ».
This fountain is located in the gardens of the baroque palace of Caserta, in the Italian region of Campania. In it, the famous myth that has as its protagonist the goddess of wild fauna, births and virginity, Artemis, and the great hunter trained by the centaur Chiron, Actaeon, is represented.
Both characters were in the forest, and while Diana bathed in the lake with her nymphs, Actaeon accompanied by his 50 dogs gazed at the goddess and her nymphs, thus being fascinated by their beauty and unable to look away.
Diana, very angry, decided to punish him by turning him into a deer, thus being devoured by his own dogs.
The reverse of the coin shows the huntress goddess Diana, in the foreground, and with a nymph. In the background, the same graphic motif of the obverse is repeated with a series of small waves. Around it, the inscriptions “REGGIA DI CASERTA” and “DIANA E ATTEONE”, on the left, the value “10 EURO” and “2023”, the year of issue of the coin. In the center an "R" identifying the Rome Mint, and below, a series of beads.
While on the obverse, in the foreground, a sculptural group made up of Actaeon and his dog can be seen, taken from the Fountain of Diana and Actaeon, one of the wonders of the Vanvitelliano park of the Royal Palace of Caserta. A series of small waves appear in the background, around the inscription «REPUBBLICA ITALIANA» and to the right, the author's signature «CASSOL».
