The Italian Mint, Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato will issue, on February 20, a 5-euro copper coin with face, dedicated to commemorating the two great cities of Bergamo and Brescia.
These cities, located in northern Italy, stand out for their emblematic art, culture and history. For all this, and to commemorate these two communities that have been among the most affected by the pandemic, they have been chosen as the Italian Capital of Culture in 2023. Thanks to this, an extensive program will be developed that will bring art to life, the theater and music in both cities.
On the obverse of the coin we can appreciate, in the upper part, a series of historical buildings of the city of Bergamo: the Torre del Galgario, the Baptistery of the Cathedral, Porta San Giacomo and the Palazzo della Ragione. In the center, a series of historical buildings of the city of Brescia: the Castle, called the "Falcone of Italy", the Palazzo della Loggia and the "Capitolium". In the lower part, on the left, a decorative motif extracted from a mosaic of the Domus dell'Ortaglia of the ancient “Brixia”, an archaeological area that preserves the most remote vestiges of Brescia. On the right, detail of a capital from the Palazzo della Ragione. Bottom left, author's signature, “U. PERNAZA». Arched, respectively at the top and bottom, the inscription “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA”.
While on the reverse appears, on the left, a bronze statue symbol of the city, kept in the Capitol of Brescia. Above, a motif from the decorative mosaic taken from the Domus dell'Ortaglia. On the right, two geese and a floral motif taken from a capital of the Palazzo della Ragione. In the center, a detail of the North Prothyrus of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo. Arched, respectively at the top and bottom, the words “BERGAMO ◦ BRESCIA” and “ITALIAN CULTURAL CAPITALS 2023”. On the left “R”, which identifies the Rome Mint, and on the right, at the bottom, the value “5 EURO”.
