I have just learned about the design and other interesting data of the second 2-euro commemorative coin of San Marino 2022 dedicated to the Italian sculptor and painter of neoclassicism, Antonio Canova, whose bicentenary of his death is celebrated.
San Marino celebrates the art of Antonio Canova on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the death of the Venetian painter and sculptor. The 2-euro commemorative coin bears on the reverse the relief image of the sculpture of the goddess Hebe, a work that Canova made between 1796 and 1817 in 4 copies that are preserved in Berlin, Saint Petersburg, Chatsworth and Forlì. The latter is the one that has been chosen for the San Marino coin. The sculptures of La Hebe, initially highly criticized for the stylistic choices of Canova, who combined marble with bronze details and, especially in the first two works, covered the candid white marble with a pinkish patina, are today considered among the masterpieces of neoclassicism.
The coin will be issued and put up for sale on October 4, it will be presented in the typical wallets that San Marino uses for commemorative 2-euro coins and its issue volume will be only 55,000 pieces.
