The German Ministry of Finance has released today, August 17, the image that will be represented on the commemorative 2-euro coin that it will issue in 2023 dedicated to the “1275th anniversary of the birth of Charlemagne”. Here I show you the image and some more interesting data about the issuance of this coin.
This coin pays tribute to Charlemagne (748 – 814), King of the Franks and Roman Emperor, whose 1275th birth anniversary falls in 2023.
The national side of the coin was designed by the Berlin artist Tobias Winnen.
It combines two contemporary pictorial elements. The personal monogram of the emperor and the octagon of the Aachen cathedral. Both motifs are fused very skilfully to form a central artwork with its own character. The work captivates with its dynamic and sculptural design. In short, it is an innovative tribute to Charlemagne, a prominent figure in European history.
The legends “KARL DER GROßE” (CHARLEMAGNE) also appear on the inside of the coin at the top and the year of issue “2023”, the years “748 – 814”, the country code “D” for the issuing country , Germany, the corresponding mintmark (“A”, “D”, “F”, “G” or “J”) and the initials of the artist Tobias Winnen, “TW”. The twelve European stars are arranged on the outer ring of the national side.
The European side corresponds to the common side of the 2 euro coin in circulation used since 2007. It shows a map of Europe without national borders.
The technical parameters of the 2-euro commemorative coin correspond to those of the regular 2-euro coin in circulation.
The edge of the German 2 Euro commemorative coin contains the following inscription: "EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT" (UNITY, JUSTICE AND FREEDOM) and a stylized federal eagle.
The issue volume will be up to 20 million pieces. The currency, like all of its kind, will be legal tender throughout the eurozone. The planned issue date is March 2023.
