A little less than a month ago I announced that Latvia would issue a 2 euro commemorative coin in support of Ukraine under the name "Ukrainian Sunflower", initially it was announced that the coin would be issued this year, but once all the details, including its design, we now know for sure that the issue will take place in 2023 and that the maximum issue volume will be 415,000 pieces.

The sunflower is one of the national symbols of Ukraine, as it is one of the largest producers and exporters of sunflower oil in the world. However, since the start of the war in Ukraine, the sunflower has become a global symbol of peace. The first time sunflowers were used as a symbol of peace was in the summer of 1996. They were then planted at a military base near Pervomaisk, about 155 kilometers south of the capital, kyiv. Now sunflowers are used as a symbol of peace and support for Ukraine throughout the world. Therefore, to show its support for Ukraine, the National Bank of Latvia will issue this commemorative coin in 2023.

The author of the coin design is the Latvian artist Krišs Salmanis. In the same figure as a central motif a stylized image of a sunflower flower. At the top is the legend “SLAVA UKRAINA ¡¡” (GLORY TO UKRAINE), and at the bottom is the name of the issuing country “LATVIJA” (LATVIJA) and the year of issue “2023”.

The edge of the coin, like all 2 euro circulation coins of the Republic of Latvia, will bear the inscription “DIEVS * SVĒTĪ * LATVIJU *” (God bless Latvia).

Thanks for the information to Paul (Euromunter).
