On July 21, the Swiss Mint, Swissmint, issued the second coin in the “Future Energies” series dedicated this year to “Solar Energy”. This is a silver face 20 Franc collectible coin in color with glow in the dark fluorescent elements.

Apart from hydropower, the main sources of renewable energy in Switzerland are solar and wind power, although these two are only used to a very small extent today. The use of inexhaustible renewable energies should help reduce dependence on oil, gas and nuclear technology and, in the long term, even eliminate fossil energy supplies.

With the “Future Energies” series, Swissmint wants to draw attention to the issues of climate change and renewable energies, which are important to all of us, and continues the three-coin series started in 2021 with the “Solar Energy” coin.

The obverse of the 20 franc “Solar Energy” silver coin is divided into two different halves. The upper half shows a colorful abstraction of the rising sun with its rays. The lower half shows various technical elements related to the effective extraction of energy from the sun as a raw material (including elements of the operation of a solar cell, technical drawings of components, and data on the use of solar energy in Switzerland). Parallel to the bottom edge, the words "SONNE" (sun) and "ENERGIE" (energy) are written in capital letters, followed by the terms "soleil" in French and "sole" in Italian. As with last year's coin, the fluorescent elements glow in the dark. The design was created by Swissmint engraver Benjamin Löbbert.

The reverse has been redesigned by Swissmint engraver Remo Mascherini. With this new design, Swissmint wants to create a link with the obverse in the future and, depending on the theme, continue to tell the story of the obverse. On the reverse appear the words CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA, the year of minting 2022, the mintmark “B” and the value “20 FR”. In the center of the reverse of the coin there is a technical drawing of the sun combined with solar cells.

The “Solar Power” Silver Coin is only available in Proof quality presented in a case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, and is part of the three-part “Future Power” series. The series will be completed in 2023 with the coin dedicated to “Wind Energy”.
