On October 14, 1872, Japan's first public rail service came into operation, running from Shimbashi in Tokyo to Sakuragicho in Yokohama. This line was built by the British, as were the first locomotives. October 14 is Railway Day in Japan.

Although the first rail service was provided by British locomotives, in the early 20th century Japan began to manufacture its own locomotives. 1906 is an important year in Japan's railway history because the Railway Nationalization Law was passed in that year, bringing several trunk lines under government control.

Japan's national railways were privatized in 1987. Many unprofitable local lines were closed. So many jobs were destroyed. However, the developments did not stop here. New bullet train lines like Akita, Nagano Shinkansen in 1997 and Kanazawa in 2015 were built.

Today the railway covers all corners of Japan. An extensive and reliable network of railways covers the four main islands of Japan, Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. Japan is crossed by about 27,268 km of railways. JR (former Japan National Railway) controls more than 20,000 km of railway, and the other railway companies control the remaining 7,133 km. In addition, some elements of railways, including technologies, punctuality rate and quality of service for passengers, make the Japanese railway considered one of the best in the world.

This long introduction serves to announce that the Ministry of Finance of Japan has decided to issue a commemorative silver collector coin to celebrate the "150th anniversary of the Railway in Japan".

The design is partly based on the Nishiki-e (color woodblock print) of the Takanawa Railway (owned by the Minato Minato Museum of Local History, Tokyo), created by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi with the help of Utagawa Toshinobu.

The design is based on the restored old Shimbashi Station, which retains the appearance of the station building at the time of the railway's opening.
