On March 21, the versions intended for collectors of the Italian commemorative 2 euro coin "Centenary of the Italian Air Force" were issued. On September 1, the remaining coins were put into circulation, distributed in rolls of 25 pieces, in the different branches of the Bank of Italy to complete the 3 million coins that make up this issue.
The coin's design reproduces the Air Force Centennial logo. On the left, an “R” appears, the mint mark of the Rome Mint; above, the initials "RI", acronym for the Italian Republic; below, the arch-shaped inscription "AERONAUTICA MILITARE"; On the right, the initials of the designer Valerio de Seta, “VdS”.
The logo created by Francesco Simone, called “Per omnia Coela”, (In all the heavens), was chosen to honor the Italian men and women who have served l' Arma Azzurra for 100 years.
This presents the essential elements, expressively collects the concept of the Centennial represented by the number “100” and by the reference to the two dates (1923-2023). The two zeros, which represent the shock waves caused by a plane exceeding the speed of sound, refer to the futuristic style.
To complete the symbology, the semicircle at the bottom right represents the sense of continuity in the history of the Air Force. A graphic resource that finds in the presence of two airplanes, one of which dates back to the time of the constitution of the Armed Forces and the other contemporary, the culmination of an ideal historical path that, as indicated by the direction of the flight, yesterday as today sees the Air Force always aiming for new and higher horizons for the good and exclusive service of Italy.
