To commemorate the 120th anniversary of the birth of John von Neumann (Neumann János in Hungarian), Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) has issued a new square coin with a face value of 3,000 forints, in honor of the world-famous Hungarian mathematician. This piece, which is available in two qualities, is the thirteenth in the popular series of coins about Hungarian scientists and inventors and their inventions.

John von Neumann was one of the most renowned Hungarian mathematicians in the world, born in Budapest on December 28, 1903. During his scientific work, which lasted almost three decades, he brought his discoveries to many scientific areas, making revolutionary discoveries about set theory. , game theory and quantum mechanics, while laying the foundations of computing as we know it today.

The composition on the obverse, created with the thematic contribution of the John von Neumann Computer Society, founded in 1968, is a plastic representation of gradually smaller regular pentagons that form a swirl, thus alluding to the idea of ​​an automatic machine capable of reproducing itself. to herself. Below the representation reads the inscription “TÜRELEM – RUGALMASSÁG – ÉRTELEM” (Patience, Flexibility, Intellect), in reference to the internationally renowned mathematician's thoughts on development in the 1950s, according to which “there is no cure for development”, and these three human qualities can help us respond to challenges and adapt to change.

The inscriptions also appear: "MAGYARORSZÁG" (Hungary), the year of minting of the piece "2023", the mint mark "BP.", the mark of the sculptor Balázs Pelcz that appears in the lower left corner of the central motif, and the face value of “3000 FORINT”.
