The National Bank of Denmark announced a few days ago that the image of Queen Margaret that appears on its circulation coins has been changed to a more current one. Thus, the coins with a mint date of 2023 already appear with the new portrait.

The dominant ornamentation on the 10 and 20 kroner coins (the only two on which the monarch appears) is a portrait of the sovereign, in keeping with the tradition for the highest denominations of Danish coins. The portrait is the work of sculptor Eva Hjorth, who wanted it to reflect the Queen's experience, authority and age. The portrait is designed in keeping with the tradition of classical coinage.

The reverse of the 10 and 20 kroon coins show three lions and nine hearts framed by a circle with a crown on top. On both sides of the crown there is ornamentation. The coat of arms with three crowned lions has been used by Danish kings for the last 800 years. In the 16th century it was decided that the number of hearts should be nine.

Coins minted between 2011 to 2022, the Queen's image was designed by artist Lis Nogel.
