Last February we learned that in Spain this year two commemorative 2-euro coins will be issued, the one already known and put into circulation last March belonging to the World Heritage Series of Spain and dedicated to the Old City of Cáceres, and the one that I can already show you its image, dedicated to the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Before seeing the design, remember about the theme to which the coin is dedicated, that Spain will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the fifth time in the second half of this year, between July 1 and December 31.

The coin reproduces the logo of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union; In its lower part, the mint mark appears. Surrounding the logo are, in a circular sense and in capital letters, the legends SPAIN 2023–SPANISH PRESIDENCY and COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION. In the lower part, the mint mark of the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre – Real Casa de la Moneda is represented with the crowned “M”. All the motifs and legends are surrounded by the twelve stars of the European Union.

The maximum issue volume of this coin is 1.5 million pieces. The release date has not yet been announced, but most likely it will be between the end of June and the beginning of July.

Presidency of the Council of the EU

The different member states of the European Union assume the Presidency of the Council, in a rotating manner, developing in turns of six months. The State in power guarantees the continuity of the work of the EU by presiding over the Council at all levels.

Currently the presidency of the Council of the EU is chaired by Sweden, which will be replaced in July by Spain.
