Started in 2021 and made up of three coins, the Austrian Mint concludes with the piece that I present to you today in the Unexplored Universe series, which takes us to the depths of the universe and offers us a fascinating vision of three physical-astronomical phenomena.

Together with experts, we approach three physical-astronomical phenomena: the Milky Way (2021) , Black Holes (2022) and Neutron Stars. Starting with something very small, a coin, we will become familiar with the infinitely large and even reach galaxies that no human being has ever seen.

Coin 2023 – Neutron Star

Among the densest stellar objects in the universe, neutron stars are heavier than the Sun itself. The coin shows a spectacular representation of this unique galactic phenomenon.

With a hemisphere in the center that curves in on one side and out on the other, the latest coin in the Uncharted Universe series is designed to be a simplified representation of that unique galactic phenomenon: the neutron star.

It is estimated that there are up to a billion neutron stars in the Milky Way. This figure is obtained by estimating the number of stars that have undergone a supernova explosion, a spectacular explosion of a massive star. Combined with gravitational collapse, it creates a compact, superdense object known as a neutron star. After black holes, neutron stars are the densest stellar objects in the universe. Even denser than atomic nuclei, which is a good way to think of them, neutron stars are heavier than the Sun itself: a teaspoon of a neutron star would weigh as much as 1,000 Cheops pyramids. Neutron stars can spin very fast, up to 700 revolutions per second,

When it comes to the exact composition of neutron stars, many things remain a mystery to scientists, but new insights are expected to be gained by studying the expansion of the universe.

Coin motifs

The words "bark" and "core" appear in German on the obverse of the coin. "Crab Pulsar" is the name of a neutron star that was created from a supernova in the year 1054, while "1.4 M" refers to the solar mass of the neutron star, "30rps" to its speed of rotation per second and “r~10km” to its radius.

On the reverse of the coin, the neutron star stands out through a colored print and a stylized representation of its magnetic field.
